Spotify is finally taking steps to address its AI slop and clone problem, a growing issue as AI-generated music floods streaming platforms. With tools like Suno and Udio making it easy to create songs in minutes, Spotify now faces challenges of spammy uploads, unauthorized AI clones, and a lack of transparency around AI use in music.
The company announced new policies aimed at protecting artists, improving authenticity, and helping listeners trust the music they stream.
Spotify’s global head of music product, Charlie Hellman, explained that the company wants to protect “authentic artists from spam, impersonation, and deception.” At the same time, Spotify acknowledges that AI can be a helpful tool for artists when used responsibly.
The platform is addressing three major pain points:
AI Slop: Low-quality, mass-generated tracks designed to flood the system.
Impersonation: Unauthorized use of an artist’s voice, including AI voice clones and deepfakes.
Transparency: Lack of disclosure when AI tools are used in music creation.
To tackle the problem, Spotify is working with DDEX, a music standards organization, to create a metadata standard that discloses AI involvement in every stage of a song’s creation.
This disclosure will cover:
AI-generated vocals and instruments.
AI-assisted mixing and mastering.
Any other creative steps where AI tools were used.
According to Sam Duboff, Spotify’s head of marketing and policy, 15 major record labels and distributors have already committed to adopting this standard. While no release date is set, labels will soon need to update how they deliver credits to Spotify.
One of the most controversial issues in AI music is voice cloning. Spotify confirmed it will take down any track that impersonates an artist’s voice — real or AI-generated — without consent.
This policy extends to:
Unauthorized AI voice replicas.
Deepfakes mimicking known artists.
Any form of vocal impersonation that misleads listeners.
By enforcing this, Spotify hopes to curb the spread of deceptive content and rebuild trust with both artists and fans.
Beyond AI clones, Spotify is also targeting spammy tactics used by uploaders trying to game the system. A new music spam filter will roll out over the next few weeks to months, designed to catch accounts mass-uploading low-quality tracks or manipulating the platform’s algorithms.
Duboff noted that these spam-prevention measures are part of Spotify’s broader mission to clean up its catalog and improve user experience.
AI in music isn’t going away. But Spotify’s new policies show the company wants to strike a balance: enabling artists to experiment with AI tools while protecting listeners from deception.
By taking these steps, Spotify positions itself as a leader in addressing AI slop and clones — a growing concern across the music industry. For both creators and fans, this could mean a future where AI is used openly, fairly, and with proper credit.
