World 10,000 silver medalist Daniel Simiu bagged the New Delhi half marathon on Sunday in India
Simiu clocked 59.27 seconds with compatriot Charles Matata finishing second in 60:05 as Ethiopian Adisu Gobena took the final position in 60:46
In the men's race, a group of approximately eight Kenyan runners, along with Ethiopian athlete Addisu Gobena, initially led the pack.
The group of runners remained closely bunched until the 13th kilometre, at which point Simiu and his teammate Charles Matata began to break away from the rest of the competitors.
Matata, who had finished as the runner-up in this year's Rock-n-Roll Half Marathon in Madrid, pressed Simiu for another five kilometres.
However, it was Simiu, the silver medalist in the World Half Marathon earlier this month in Riga, Latvia, who managed to increase his pace at the right moment, establishing a lead of at least half a minute over Matata.
Simiu was deligted with the win.
"It was amazing to run here however im disappointed with my timing It was amazing for the event record but fell short. But nevertheless, It was a fantastic experience in the Vedanta half Delhi marathon. Hopefully, I will be able to break the course record next year I would like to congratulate the Delhi half marathon organisers for the Delhi half marathon for hosting a brilliant event" noted Simiu
In the women's category, Viola Chesang was the highly ranked Kenyan finishing third in 69:09 .
The race was won by former Olympic 10,000m champion Almaz Ayana of Ethiopia and 2017 winner of the event in 67:58 with Uganda ' s Stella Chesang second in 68:26
In a tactical duel, Ayana was joined by her teamates She was joined by her Ethiopian compatriots Aberash Minsewo and Dessie Anchinalu, as well as Kenyan Viola Chepngeno and Uganda's Stella Chesang.
They covered the first quarter of the race in times ranging from 15 minutes and 45 seconds to 15 minutes and 47 seconds, with Kenyan runner Vivian Cheruiyot, the Rio Olympics 5000m victor, slightly trailing. Although Ayana maintained her 16-minute pace for each of the five-kilometre intervals, she slowed down in the final stages of the race, ultimately securing the win.
