Shabana head coach Sammy Okoth wants his charges to use their win against Tusker as a springboard in safeguarding their Premier League status.
Okoth went poetic following his team’s 1-0 win over the former champions, their first since returning to topflight football.
“This is what we have longed for. The win has injected some zest into the boys and they are now confident they have found their footing in the cutthroat competition,” he said.
The win pulled the Glamour Boys out of the shadows of earlier struggles and catapulting them to the 13th on the KPL standings with six points from six matches. The relief was palpable, not only among the players but also in the heart of their passionate fanbase, who had stood steadfastly by their side during the testing times.
“We need them to continue attending our matches to roar us on. Their presence in past matches has given us hope amid the challenges we face,” Okoth remarked as he vowed to steer them to a decent finish.
He observed that the team, whose slogan ‘Tore Bore’ means ‘we are on fire’ are also keen to repay the faith shown on them by shirt sponsors, Bangbet, who have ensured the team does not lack on and off the pitch.
Before the win over Tusker, Shabana had had a torrid start to the season, which started with a 1-0 defeat against fellow promoted side Murang’a Seal at Raila Odinga Stadium in Homa Bay.
They then picked two back-to-back 1-1 draws against Talanta and Kenya Police.
Another 1-0 loss against Kariobangi Sharks was followed by a one-all against AFC Leopards. They share the same number of points with Bidco United, Muhoroni Youth and Kenya Police, albeit a healthier goal difference.
