Atleast six people have died in Migori town after a driver of a truck lost control and rammed into motorbikes and vehicles on Saturday morning.
Several other boda boda riders are still trapped in the wreckage.
Nyanza police boss Manasse Musyoka said police have joined in the rescue mission and taken some of the riders who were injured to hospitals.
“We understand a driver or some lorry lost its control and ploughed into a crowd. Very unfortunate,” he said.
The accident happened in the morning at about 7 am when the speeding lorry rammed into parked motorbikes and vehicles.
Migori county commander Mark Wanjala said the accident happened at Kakrao center about five kilometers from Migori town.
"Six people died on the spot while the seventh just died at Migori Referral Hospital where those hurt have been receiving treatment," Wanjala said.
He added that three are in critical condition.
Witnesses said the driver also died on the spot.
"For about five kilometers he (the driver) managed to control the vehicle but when he reached in town, he was hindered by the heavy traffic," Olga Akinyi a trader said.
A pregnant woman and a young man were pushed into the river.
Wanjala said they have alerted divers and local communities downstream to help in locating those bodies.
A total of 15 motorbikes had been parked by the road =side at the time of the accident.
Azimio leader Raila Odinga sent his condolence message to the families who lost their loved ones in the tragic accident.
"I offer my deepest sympathies to all those who have lost their loved ones, friends, and colleagues in the tragic accident that occurred this morning at the boda boda stage in Migori town," he said.
