Senators propose banning teens from using AI chatbots under a new bill called the GUARD Act. The legislation would require AI companies to verify users’ ages, preventing anyone under 18 from accessing chatbots. This move comes amid growing concerns about children interacting with AI, particularly regarding safety and mental health.
The bill mandates that AI platforms check whether users are over 18. Verification could involve uploading a government ID or using alternative methods such as facial scans. Companies would need to implement these measures before letting teens access AI chatbots, ensuring stricter oversight of minors online.
AI chatbots would be required to disclose that they are not human every 30 minutes. The bill also prohibits chatbots from generating sexual content for minors or promoting harmful behavior, including suicide. These rules aim to protect teens from potentially dangerous or misleading interactions.
The push comes after safety advocates and parents voiced concerns in a Senate hearing. Senators Josh Hawley (R-MO) and Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) are leading the effort to hold AI companies accountable, emphasizing responsible development while shielding teens from risks associated with AI chatbots.
