Nairobi governor Johnson Sakaja has released a video of three men he says were caught on Tuesday morning ferrying drugs stolen from a government hospital within the county.
In a tweet published in the afternoon, the governor said the suspects were arrested carrying the alleged loot in a van following a tip-off from a member of the public.
“After a tip-off yesterday, these thugs were caught this morning stealing a van full of drugs from one of our facilities,” Sakaja tweeted alongside a video showing cartons stacked in a 14-seater matatu," Sakaja said.
The clip features two men who are seen inspecting the consignment, claiming they intercepted the matatu on its way to Murang’a.
The alleged suspects are seen sitting on the ground, being questioned by police officers.
“These ones will be an example to the others who have been stealing what’s meant for the people. As we implement our HMIS, we are strengthening vigilance,” he added.
He was referring to the Health management information systems (HMIS) the government has been rolling out across counties to address the issue of drug shortage by providing real-time information on stock.
