Robert Tinotenda Mugabe Junior, the son of former Zimbabwe president Robert Mugabe, was arrested on allegations of malicious damage to property.

According to local police, the 31-year-old allegedly vandalised cars and some property during a party in the capital Harare over the weekend.

A Monday statement from the office of the Commissioner General of Police said Mugabe Junior’s arrest followed a complaint from his friend, whom police identified as Sindiso Nkatazo, also 31.

The damaged property was valued at Ksh.1.5 million ($12,000), police said.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms that Robert Tinotenda Mugabe (Junior) (31) has been arrested on Malicious Damage to Property allegations after a complaint by his friend Nkatazo Sindiso (31) that he destroyed property worth USD12 000.00 at house number 3A Verdi Lane, Strathayen, Harare,” read the statement.

He was detained pending arraignment.

Local outlet ZimLive on Monday afternoon published a video of Mugabe Junior, who is a fashion designer, being escorted to what it said was a Magistrate’s court.

Mugabe junior is the second child of the former president who died in 2019 at the age of 95, two years after being forced to resign.

He had been in power for 37 years.
