Manchester United's hopes of signing Sofyan Amrabat appear to have taken a hit following a worrying update from respected journalist Samuel Luckhurst on transfer deadline day.
United are attempting to wrap up several deals before the window closes for Premier League clubs at 11pm on Friday evening.
Erik ten Hag's side are expected to complete the £4.3m signing of Fenerbahce goalkeeper Altay Bayindir, who will join the club as back-up to first-choice shot-stopper Andre Onana.
United are also set to sign Sergio Reguilon on loan from Tottenham to provide cover at left-back, following an injury to Luke Shaw.
The main priority for United, however, is bringing another midfielder to Old Trafford before the window closes, with the club in talks to sign Fiorentina star Amrabat.
United turned their attention to the 27-year-old midfielder late in the transfer window, having tracked him for much of the summer.
The Italian club turned down a loan offer from United for the Morocco international on Thursday.The Athletic reported that the offer was for a loan deal, with Ten Hag's side proposing a €2m loan fee. However, the fee would be split in half, with United only needing to pay €1m before January, with a break clause involved.
Fiorentina rejected the offer due to the guaranteed sum they were offered, and are believed to prefer a permanent sale of Amrabat or a loan with an obligation to buy.
United returned to the negotiating table with Fiorentina and appeared to make a breakthrough with the Italian club over a deal for Amrabat on Thursday evening.
90min journalist Graeme Bailey reported that Fiorentina had agreed to make Amrabat's proposed move to United a loan with an obligation to buy at the end of the campaign.
Taking to Twitter (X), he wrote: "Sources confirm that Fiorentina have agreed to make Sofyan Amrabat's move to Manchester United a loan, but it has to have obligation to become permanent."Talks progressing now between clubs with personal terms already in place."
But the deal has been thrown into doubt following an update from Manchester Evening News journalist Samuel Luckhurst.
"Altay Bayindir and Sergio Reguilon the probable incomings at #mufc today," tweeted Luckhurst, with no mention of Amrabat.
"Outgoings likely to be low-level (and/or loans) unless something drastic changes."
It remains to be seen whether United will be able to complete a deal for Amrabat in time.
