Kenyans on social media have critically reacted to the Ministry of Education for bragging about a brand new photocopier it received from USAID.
The ministry took to Twitter to share photos of Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang receiving the photocopier from USAID’s Amy Pekol, who delivered it to his office.
The ministry followed the photos with the caption: “The Principal Secretary for the State Department for Basic Education, Dr. Belio Kipsang receives a state of the art photocopier from @USAIDKenya official in charge of Education and Youth Affairs, Ms Amy Pekol, in his office.”
The ministry further explained the role USAID is playing in the education sector in Kenya, and goals they aim to achieve with their activities in the country.
However, the sharing of the development left many Kenyans asking questions on what should be shared on social media platforms, especially by the government of Kenya.
Lawyer Ahmednasir Abdullahi opened the criticism, saying despite USAID being philanthropic towards developing countries, a photocopier is the last thing to floss about.
“USAID is very generous with developing countries and can floss over its generosity...but surely, Kenya doesn't need a photocopier from USAID,” Abdullahi said.
Kenyans on Twitter joined in the criticism:
"Would not even allow for any photo session with that kind of donation. Too cheap politics and propaganda unless it is wired," one said.
"How can the USAID parade a whole PS to receive a photocopier?" another quipped.
"That I'd correct GM , that photo copier cost little, it's not something to give to whole ministry." another added.
The criticism came in thick and fast!
"Maybe just may be it can mark exams."
"I think CSs and PSs are overdoing this Foreigners photo op. To take a photo receiving a photocopier is demeaning. Were they appointed to take photos with Caucasian ‘investors’? They need less photos with Wazungus and more updates on developments."
"Let us assume that this is a sample, right. Then after some success or failure USAID will then embark on the real macro generosity."
Others who joined in criticising the move said they want to see real development from the government, rather than photo ops of 'cheap' donations.
