KENHA director general Kungu Ndung'u has said plans are in motion to start rehabilitating parts of Mombasa Road that were damaged during the construction of the Expressway.
Ndung'u on Tuesday during a celebration to mark the expressway's milestones since its launch said the rehabilitation process will start in eight weeks.
He explained that plans have been ongoing but in the interim stage as the ministry is still finalising on the contracts guiding the process.
Ndung'u said the interim stage of the rehabilitation process is close to ending.
" We expect these contracts to be in place in about eight weeks so that we can have this road strengthened, properly marked, the drainages fixed and also the construction of an extra footpath so that pedestrians are not inconvenienced," he said.
Ndung'u said some of the repairs to be done on the road will be done by the Moja expressway company which is a stakeholder.
He said there is a need to enhance the facilities that were existing before the expressway.
" KENHA and the government are going to implement some additional facilities including extra footbridges and also strengthening of the road," he said.
Former Transport CS James Macharia in May last year had said the contractor will get Sh9 billion for the rehabilitation of Mombasa Road damaged by the expressway.
During the construction of the expressway, some lanes of the lower roads chipped away leaving the paths to be narrow thus increasing congestion along Mombasa Road.
