Amira Sailors' new signing Gilly Okumu has said the quest for a new challenge was the reason why she decamped Strathmore Scorpions.
Okumu, one of the most experienced players in the women's hockey Premier League, finally parted ways with the students after 12 years of service.
The African Cup for Club Championship in February that was played in Nairobi was Okumu's last assignment with the varsity side.
As the maverick forward prepares to make her debut against Wolverines on April 10, she admitted that it was a tough call but change was necessary. She said she will give her all to ensure Sailors win the match.
"I wanted a totally different challenge from what I am used to," she pointed out. I require an environment that is guided by maturity and experience. Sailors offer that.
"I know Sailors struggled last season but through teamwork, I believe we can achieve a top-three finish this season. We will take baby steps in our quest to reach the top but we have to register three points today."
Okumu helped Scorpions win their maiden league title last season albeit unbeaten-an achievement that tops her list.
Despite Scorpions' failure to win the ACCC, Okumu tipped Strathmore to continue souring high under the stewardship of coach Meshack Senge.
"In Senge, the team is in safe hands. I had several title heartbreaks in 'Strath' colours but last season's triumph will forever remain etched in my mind. I wanted to win the ACCC cup in spite of anything but that never happened."
"It was also the right time to give the junior players the chance to thrive. As much as Scorpions players are young, some of them need to get out of their comfort zones so that the team can achieve more success. I wish them all the best but they remain 'my family' since my success so far is because of Scorpions."
Okumu is expected to return to Germany for a fifth professional stint with Eintracht Frankfurt later this month.
"I am supposed to travel to Germany at the end of the month though I am yet to fill in the required documents."
