Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) women’s basketball head coach Anthony Ojukwu hopes they will not relent in their Premier League title charge, after impressively keeping a 100 percent winning record in 16 matches.
KPA defeated ANU Panthers 89-30 over the weekend at Makande Gymnasium, a win that took their total tally to 32 points.
Ojukwu described the match as an easy one, but was impressed with the way his players showed enthusiasm.
“With the due respect, these small teams always don’t give me a challenge and the competition I need but I am happy at least for the second weekend running the fitness and team chemistry levels have started getting back after the long break we had.
“In summary we are on the right track and we are preparing well for any game that is ahead of us. The team is improving day by day and I believe by the time we start the playoffs we shall be at a better place,” Ojukwu said.
KPA who are the defending champions are left with six games to go in the regular season.
Elsewhere, Zetech Sparks head coach Maurice Obilo is impressed with his girls’ resilience, who despite what he called disrupted preparations, won their two weekend matches.
Zetech hammered JKUAT LYNX 70-26 on Saturday before defeating Eagle Wings 84-16 on Sunday at Ulinzi Sports Complex.
“As much as we didn’t train well because of the rains that were there for the better part of last week’s evenings now that we train outdoors, the ladies came out very determined to work and that’s how we won our Saturday and Sunday’s game,” Obilo said.
Obilo added that the wins are great motivation for his team.
“It’s a motivation because the wins has moved us some steps in the standings with three games to go; so we are now working on those three remaining games,” Obilo added.
Following the wins, Zetech moved to second position on the log with 34 points from 18 matches, winning 16 and losing two.
Meanwhile UON Dynamites head coach Eugene Kalman whose side lost 33-51 to JKUAT LYNX on Sunday has called upon his players to pull up their socks especially on their offense.
“We are still having problems with our offense, most teams just play zones on us and prevent us from drive pass, drive lay ups. We need to shoot better from outside, having the smallest team in the premier league, as most are about five foot 1-3 inches tall.
Our defense wasn’t really good also over the weekend, we allowed too many points in the paint, we were also not sharp, we didn’t train well over the week due to the rains,” Kalman said.
Dynamites have played 21 games, winning 11 and losing 10 with one game to go against Strathmore Swords.
