Ugandan Godfrey Nsubuga has turned his focus on Nandi Shield after recording his maiden win at the Kenya Amateur Golf Championships (KAGC) victory at the Tea Fields trophy on the par 72 Kericho Golf Club when he fired three over par 219.
After finishing second and third in several meetings, the Mehta Golf Club player fired three over par 75 (with pars in 1,2,4,5, 7, 1, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17 and 18, with a single birdie in 10th, with bogeys in 3, 6, 7 and 9) in the third and final round to dethrone compatriot Michael Alunga.
Despite recording poor results in the last round, his second round score of two under par 70 saved him after taking the lead on Saturday after finishing second with a shot less in round one against Kenya Railways John Lejirma, who had fired one over par 73.
Nsubuga said he has been finishing second and third on numerous occasions and was, therefore, excited to clinch his first title on his debut in Kericho.
“The win was good for me because it was my first time to play on this course. I have been second in many meetings but today was a good day for me to run away with the victory,” said Nsubuga.
He added that he had a game plan on how he should secure a much-needed win, which worked perfectly.
“The tournament was good and the course was so playable. However, in round one, I had challenges in putting because of some grass on the greens but in the second and third rounds, the greens were fantastic. That is why I played very well in the two finals rounds,” added Nsubuga.
With the victory, Nsubuga said his focus has turned to Nandi Shield at the par 72 Nandi Bears Golf Club.
“This is done and my focus now turns to Nandi Shield next weekend. I hope to replicate this form," he said.
