Agnes Jebet Ngetich will be a star attraction at the second Athletics Kenya (AK) cross-country meeting this Saturday at Kapsokwony High School, Bungoma County.

The world cross-country senior women's 8km bronze medallist is bracing up for the World Cross Country Championships set for March next year in Belgrade, Serbia. 

Ng'etich finished second at the Kericho cross-country meeting and said she is using the current season as a build-up for the global championships.

“I have started my training ahead of the global show in Belgrade, where I want to improve on my bronze medal,” she said Ngetich.

Ng'etich won her first medal in the senior category at the World Cross Country Championships in Bathurst, Australia, where Beatrice Chebet trounced Ethiopian Tsigie Gebreselama to second place. 

She said the Kapsokwony event will be her first AK meeting after the season kicked off in Machakos last weekend.

 Sandra Chebet won the women's 10km race in Machakos in a time of 34:02.6 and was followed by Mercy Chepkorir (35:04.4) and Teresa Cherotich (35.09.1).  Vincent Mutai won the men’s 10km title in 29:39.1 followed by Arthunus Kioko (29:42.2) and Brian Kiptoo (30:07.6) respectively.

“I want to have a good start in the series and earn an automatic qualification for the national trials. I want to run well come Saturday in Kapsokwony,” she said. 

AK western region secretary, Homer Mugalitsi, said they expect over 500 athletes to compete in various races. "We are ready to host the event and we expect many athletes to participate," said Mugalitsi.

He said the region has always been hosting the event in December but this time we are hosting in October.
