Champions National Cereals and Produce Board have upped their training ahead of the East Central Africa Handball Federation Championship slated for Nairobi in December.

Coach Bryan Mathews said his men's and women’s teams have changed tack in training as they target the titles in the two categories.

NCPB men hold both the national and regional titles while the women’s side were third in the local front and bagged silver in the regional show, held in Zanzibar last year.

“We are already in strict training ahead of the regional tournament while still focusing our attention on the national titles,” said Mathews.

“Some of the teams expected at the championship are already playing friendly matches and to counter that, we will have to adjust our training accordingly.”

“I am, therefore, teaching my players some new things. I am working hard to find a perfect balance to bag the two trophies.”

On Tuesday, the unbeaten millers easily dismissed Technical University of Kenya (Tuk) 49-22 in a men’s Kenya Handball Federation league midweek encounter at Nyayo Stadium.

This result moved them to second on the table with 14 points after seven games, joint with Equity Bank and General Service Unit (GSU). Ulinzi are top of the table with maximum 18 points from nine matches.

“It was a good match as I tried different systems in defence and a few new styles of play in attack. It worked fine as we had few turnovers,” he observed.

Brian Wekhuka top-scored for the millers with six goals with Robert Maraga, Julius Chiunda and William Malui adding five goals each.

In a related development, KHF will have a two-day national coaches’ grading course at Highway High School on October 20.

KHF technical Director George Asimeto said the candidates must be available for both theory and practical sessions. Entry fee is Sh 4,000.

“This course is for coaches who do not have Licence ‘D’ or have never been graded as coaches. Successful candidates will be awarded national certificates and licences,” said Asimeto.
