Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen is now blaming former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s regime for the slow implementation of the Kenya Kwanza government’s infrastructure development agenda.
During a meeting with Nakuru County Leaders on Thursday Murkomen said the huge pending bills that have accumulated over the last two years have resulted in stalled projects across the country.
“The implementation of Kenya Kwanza's infrastructure development agenda has been hampered by the huge pending bills that have accumulated over the last two years, resulting in stalled road projects across the country,” he noted.
At the same time, Murkomen highlighted that plans are underway to resolve all the issues that have hindered the completion of infrastructure projects.
“As an administration, we are working round the clock to sort out some of these bills and allow for the resumption of construction work as we seek to enhance connectivity,” said the Transport CS.
The CS also confirmed the government’s commitment to complete the construction of the Ksh.3 billion Lanet Airstrip project.
“I further expressed the Government is committed to completing the expansion of the Lanet airstrip and the construction of a civilian terminal at the airstrip to facilitate faster movement of people and transportation of horticultural produce to destination markets,” said Murkomen.
The Ksh.3 billion Lanet airstrip project located at the 81 Tank Battalion Barracks in Nakuru was intended to have been completed two years after its kick-off and it was to be ready for use by June 2022 as had earlier been stated by the previous Road and Transport boss during the conferment of Nakuru City status.
The airstrip was supposed to promote tourism while easing the transportation of farm produce from the county to international markets.
“Works on the Lanet Airport which entails extending the current runway from 1.1km to 1.7km will be completed by June next year,” former CS Macharia said at the time.
