Trans Nzoia Open and Goldfield champion Elvis Muigua is confident of upsetting top professional golfers at this weekend’s Pro-Am Governor’s Cup at the par 70 Malindi Golf Club.
The young Muigua will be up against experienced Dismas Indiza, Kopan Timbe, John Wangai, Jacob Okello, Mathew Wahome, Daniel Nduva, and Alfred Nandwa among others.
The two-day event, which tees off this morning and ends on Saturday, will see the 20-year-old player seek to improve on his poor performance in the last two Kenya Amateur Golf Championships (KAGC) series.
Muigua said it was his time to redeem his image despite the heavy presence of experienced and professional players.
“Playing with pros is a good thing to do because, at my age, I am able to learn from them. It will be a good event and a learning experience for me in the two-day show,” said Muigua.
Muigua, a member of Kiambu Golf Club, said the experience he will gain in Malindi will be vital for the remaining KAGC events.
“My preparations have been good heading into the Governor’s Cup event and looking forward to better results,” said Muigua.
He won his first KAGC title during the Trans Nzoia Open at the Kitale Club on April 22 before adding the Goldfields title in Kakamega on July 2.
He also went ahead to win the Kenya Junior Matchplay title at the Sigona on August 24 after edging Mikael Kihara in the final. Muigua will be on the tee box at 7:30 a.m. alongside Malind’s Tokero Ole Kina and Nyali’s Kalamu Choyo.
KAGC series leader Michael Karanga returns to the club in search of another title after winning the Vasco da Gama title on August 13.
The Kenya Amateur Strokeplay and Kenya Amateur Matchplay winner will be up against Kenya team captain Dennis Maara, John Lejirma, Adel Balala, John Kisia, Ebill Omollo, and Steven Orinda among others.
He will tee off at 7:50 a.m. alongside the hosts duo of Francis Dau and Mathew Wahome.
The Pro-Am event has also attracted two ladies led by former Kenya Ladies Open champion Naomi Wafula from Malindi and Jacquelyne Walter from Vipingo Ridge. Wafula will be on the tee at 7:20 with the Kenya Railways duo of amateur Lejirma and professional George Felix.
