A notorious city thug, who has been on the list of Nairobi’s most wanted, was arrested Monday night by police officers from the Huruma police station after accosting a couple that was headed home from work.
George Ngugi alias Choku is said to have attacked Mohammed Adan and his wife Sameha Mihammud, robbing them of their mobile phones before taking off on a motorbike together with an accomplice.
A statement issued by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Wednesday reports that the police officers, led by the station's OCS, happened to be on-site and immediately initiated a chase.
"In an incident that literary shook the shacks lined up near the Kariobangi-Huruma flyover, the OCS leading his anti-mugging squad on a motorbike went after the thugs with exasperation, in a chase reminiscent of the Grand Prix motorcycle championship," wrote DCI on Twitter.
The dramatic chase, however, did not last for long as the getaway motorbike became wobbly and eventually hit a pavement bringing the thugs to a halt.
"The nduthi ferrying the thug began wobbling from one end of the road to the other as the thug who was hanging precariously on the pillion seat turned back only to be met by the fiery eyes of the Huruma station commander, who was shouting instructions to his police rider as he leaned on his shoulders...ongeza speed! shika hii gaidi!!!" said DCI.
The driver immediately escaped by running under the water culverts leaving the thug as prey to the officers and was apprehended.
Subsequent interrogation revealed that Choku had been arrested in 2011 for preparation to commit a felony, and was released on cash bail.
Police also discovered that he was also again arrested in 2012 for the same offence and was also in possession of narcotics.
Choku will remain in police custody awaiting arraignment.
