Masinde Muliro University RFC were on Saturday relegated from the Kenya Cup after losing 18-14 to Mwamba RFC at the MMUST Grounds in Kakamega.
The Makakas have been relegated to the second division after a poor run in the top division and will now have to plot for life in the second-tier. Their demotion brings the curtains down on a three-year stay in Kenya’s top-tier rugby club competition.
The varsity boys had hoped to win their second game of the season and keep their place in the Kenya Cup, but it was not to be. In this match they settled first and went ahead when Griffin Chao scored the first try, which Eric Cantona converted to make the score 7-0, but the visiting Mwamba struck back a few minutes later with two successive tries and one conversion, bringing the score to 12-7 at the halftime break.
The hosts took the lead again after Jadah Abdon scored a try, which was converted, but Brian Kivasia's two penalty kicks gave the visitors a 15-14 lead, which was later increased to 18-14 with another penalty kick.
The Masinde Muliro University boys will now concentrate on KRU Championship, with a view of a quick bounce back to the top division next term.
