Micah Richards has hilariously recalled the story where Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard told him to ‘f**k off’.
In a career that spanned 14 years, Richards played for clubs like Manchester City, Fiorentina and Aston Villa.
On the international stage, the defender was capped 13 times by England.Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, Richards recalled the time he took the wrong boots to his first England training session back in 2006 and as a result, had to ask Gerrard for a pair.
He said: “I always took my own boots. So I had two pairs - a mould and a stud. I look in my bag and as I'm going down I realise it's four left feet. So then I go in the corridor and I see Steven Gerrard - it's the first time I've met him properly.
“I said, 'Stevie, you can't borrow us a pair of boots can you?' Luckily we were a similar size.”
Richards continued: “He gives me his boots, we go train - it's the best training session I've ever had.“So I said to Steven Gerrard afterwards 'can I have the boots?' - he said 'f*** off!’.”Richards’ co-hosts Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer were left in stitches as the former City man told the story.Referencing Richards’ 13 England caps, Lineker joked: “That's amazing, no wonder you did not get that many England caps.”During the podcast, Lineker also revealed he was offered chances to go into management.
The former Barcelona and Tottenham Hotspur striker said: “I got a couple of job offers, I think Villa, Doug Ellis (Villa chair) asked me to be Villa manager, and Leicester did at one point.
“I got a phone call from Doug Ellis, it was shortly after, I can’t remember the era apart from the fact that it was relatively soon after I’d finished playing, and he said, 'Would you be interested in the Aston Villa job’. And I just said, 'Management is not for me, sorry Doug’.”
