Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana is set to miss up to seven matches including a huge Premier League clash.
During the summer transfer window, United spent big to lure Onana away from Inter Milan to Old Trafford.
The deal to take the goalkeeper to Manchester cost a reported fee of £47.2 million.
Onana is United’s no.1 after the departure of David de Gea, who left the club upon the expiration of his contract. However, United could be without Onana for a crucial part of their season.
This is due to the fact that the 27-year-old is set to feature in the Africa Cup of Nations, which is set to take place in January and February.
Onana originally quit the Cameroon national team after falling out with manager Rigobert Song. However, he was included in the Cameroon squad for the latest international break, which included an AFCON Group C qualifier against Burundi.
Onana played the full match as Cameroon came out 3-0 winners thanks to goals from Bryan Mbeumo, Christopher Wooh and Vincent Aboubakar. With Onana set to feature in AFCON, he will therefore miss four Premier League matches against Tottenham Hotspur, Wolverhampton Wanderers, West Ham United and Aston Villa. In addition, he will also miss the two-legged Carabao Cup semi-final if United get that far. Plus the fourth round of the FA Cup.The first Champions League last-16 ties are scheduled to take place a week after the conclusion of AFCON.Announcing his return to the national team, Onana wrote: “In the world of football, as in life, decisive moments arise that require crucial choices to be made.“In recent months, I have been confronted with trials marked by injustice and manipulation. Yet my unshakeable love and attachment to my homeland, Cameroon, remain intact.
“My desire to represent my country has never wavered since my youth, and this aspiration remains an inseparable part of my identity. Nothing and no one can shake this conviction.”
