Lorry drivers ferrying quarry materials along a 35km stretch between Lukenya and Joska staged a go slow to protest against the poor condition of the road.
This follows one of several incidents in which a lorry broke down in the middle of the road, a situation the drivers attribute to the bad condition of the stretch.
On Thursday, close to 100 lorries stopped on the road held protests, calling on the government to fix the stretch.
Jamleck Gitonga, a driver, said, "This road is in a very bad state and has caused our vehicles to break down frequently. We have raised concerns several times, but our pleas are falling on deaf ears. We are also facing a situation of extremely dusty roads and sometimes we can't see well."
Another driver, Mark Nzioki, said that some drivers were forced to buy spare parts after the vehicles got damaged and their bosses would not foot the cost.
Lawrence Ngovi, an official from the Machakos county government, sought to calm the drivers and said plans are underway to tarmac the road.
He said that the stretch from Mombasa Road to Muthwani and Kenol will also be tarmacked.
Ngovi added that the road was a major revenue stream and road works should be prioritised.
