A section of leaders have come out to urge the Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Coalition to call off the weekly anti-government protests and give room for a national engagement to resolve the current standoff.
In a joint statement issued on Tuesday in Nairobi, the leaders led by Prof. PLO Lumumba and Environmentalist Dr. Isaac Kalua Green pointed out that the chaotic and violent scenes witnessed during the protests could plunge the country into anarchy, hence the need for an urgent national conference.
“What we have witnessed in the recent past threatens the existence of Kenya as we know it. We know what looks like a political contest can quickly degenerate into a full-scale breakdown of law and order such as the Invasion of Private Properties which leads to anarchy,” reads the statement.
“We call for a national engagement not just a dialogue. An urgent National Conference that brings together all sectors of the society to deliberate on the current situation and Kenya we want.”
They added: “…we sincerely urge the Azimio Coalition to consider calling off the weekly demonstrations and give room for national engagement.”
The leaders urged every Kenyan to take individual responsibility which leads to peace and tranquility.
They further urged the Executive, the Legislature, and the Council of Governors to convene an urgent meeting to address the prevailing challenges, particularly the cost of living.
“Our economy is going through unprecedented stress and needs to be fixed. There is serious unemployment and a high cost of living. The depreciation of the Kenya shilling, and high taxation are not helping the already bad situation,” they noted.
Other leaders present included; Philip Kisia, Charles Wambugu, Dr Charles Maranga and Florence Machio.
The Azimio coalition led by Opposition chief Raila Odinga has vowed to hold protests every Monday and Thursday until President William Ruto's government heeds their demands among them lowering the cost of living and opening of the electoral servers.
