Weldon Langat and Immaculate Anyango are the Discovery Cross Country champions after triumphing in the men and women’s events at the Eldoret Sports Club, Eldoret on Sunday.
Lang'at who trains in Iten, Elgeyo Marakwet County won the men’s race in 30:31.2 ahead of Bravin Kiprop (30:38.1) and 10km record holder Rhonex Kipruto (30:38.1).
The unfancied Anyango who also trains in Iten ran a brilliant race to stun top guns in the women’s race, taking victory in 27:49.4 with Catherine Reline (28:02.3) and Christine Njoki (28:02.3) finishing in the second and third places respectively.
The youthful Njoki was let down by an unfortunate fall in the final lap after leading for virtually the entire race with that tumble allowing Anyango and Reline to eat into her lead and overtake her.
Maurine Jepkoech from Nandi County clocked 21:19.0 to win the 6km Under-20 women’s crown while Kevin Kiprop (25:05.5) won the 8km Under-20 men’s title.
