The Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education now wants the SRC to harmonise teachers' housing allowance.

Kuppet secretary general Akelo Misori said the allowance given to teachers in all counties should be similar.

Misori accused the Salaries and Remuneration Commission of scuttling ongoing discussions between the teachers' employer and union.

“These allowances have been there since 2012 and the amounts are not even realistic,” Akelo said.

For teachers serving in cities like Nairobi, Misori said the Sh3500 is not realistic.

“When you give a teacher in Kileleshwa Sh3500 house allowance where do you expect them to stay?” Misori paused.

Misori said the current allowance only allows teachers to stay in slums.

“Our strategies will not be limited to cheap methods like a demonstration. We will use real strategy to achieve the demands we want,” Misori said.

KUPPET deputy secretary general Moses Nthurima said the current allowance is a mockery of pay.

“They need to study the economic index, what Sh6000 could pay for ten years ago is not same as right now,”Nthurima said.
