The Kenya Rugby Union have been criticised following the postponement of the prestigious National Prescott Cup at the last minute.
Some teams from out of Nairobi were informed about the postponement while on their way to Nairobi for the tournament that was to start on Thursday at the RFUEA grounds along Ngong Road.
“We regret to inform you that the Prescott National Cup, organised by the Kenya Rugby Union, is being postponed due to circumstances beyond our control. We understand the disappointment this may cause, but the safety and well-being of our participants and attendees are our top priority,” KRU said in a statement.
“We are actively working to reschedule the event, and new dates will be announced in due course. Thank you for your understanding and continued support.”
According to a letter sent to participating schools, the tournament was postponed following consultations and guidance from the Ministry of Education.
“The ministry advised that we postpone the tournament to a later date. This recommendation stems from the ongoing end-term examinations in schools and the diligent preparation for the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education,” said the letter signed by KRU Development Officer Ronald Okoth.
Okoth said they are working towards securing new dates for the tournament.
"Once confirmed, we will promptly communicate the revised dates to all the parties involved to allow adequate preparation and participation in the prestigious event,” Okoth added.
A coach who sought anonymity faulted the union for failing to consult the Ministry of Education before settling on the dates.
“It seems like they only remembered to inform the Ministry of Education about the tournament on Wednesday instead of doing it much earlier to get permission for the same. The learners belong to the Ministry,” said the coach.
In the draws released earlier in the week, Koyonzo headline Pool ‘A’ alongside Nyanza giants St Mary’s Yala, Malindi High School, St. Augustine Secondary, and Kabianga School.
Nyanza Region 15’s champions Kisii School are in Pool ‘B’ against Ofafa Jericho, Alliance Boys, Vihiga High, and Ngong Township Secondary School.
