Jamie Carragher has been proved right after Casemiro was sent off for Manchester United against Galatasaray.
On Tuesday night, Erik ten Hag’s United side were looking to kick-start their Champions League campaign against Turkish champions Galatasaray.
United went ahead thanks to Rasmus Hojlund’s goal in the 17th minute but ex-Red Devil Wilfried Zaha levelled things up just six minutes after.
In the second half, Hojlund gave United a 2-1 lead in the 67th minute. However, United were stunned again as Kerem Aturkoglu dragged Galatasaray level just two minutes after Hojlund’s second goal. Mauro Icardi scored to make it 3-2 with 81 minutes on the clock.
Before Icardi’s goal, Casemiro was shown a second yellow after fouling Dries Merten inside the penalty area.
The Brazilian’s red card has proven Carragher correct after the former Liverpool man picked out Casemiro as a player who could struggle this season.
Back in August, Carragher said on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football: “I have a feeling at some stage, Casemiro is going to get really exposed.
“Manchester United's midfield was non-existent, it emptied. It was a concern. If you watched Man Utd in pre-season, leaving Casemiro on his own when Mason Mount and Bruno Fernandes go forward, it looks great. But you’ve got to have a balance. And the front three don't really work hard enough in a defensive sense.”He continued: “That would have been a real worry because Wolves have got a new manager only four days ago and a lot of misery around how their season may end up, but they’ve been brilliant tonight.”
Casemiro joined United last summer from Real Madrid in a deal worth a reported £70 million.
During the 22/23 season, the Brazilian was one of United’s most important players as he enjoyed a stellar campaign in the middle of Ten Hag’s midfield. However, Casemiro has yet to rediscover the same kind of form at the start of the 23/24 season.
United will be back in Premier League action this weekend as they take on Brentford at Old Trafford.
