Nine counties have confirmed participation in the Intercounty swimming Championships slated for November 11-12 at the M-Pesa Academy in Thika, Kiambu.
Kiambu County chairman Stanley Kaberu said the hosts Kiambu, Nairobi, Kajiado, Nyeri, Machakos, Kisumu, Nakuru, and Mombasa will grace the championship.
Kaberu said the counties will send their top swimmers for the event as the season, which started last month intensifies ahead of the National Short Course Championship and CANA Zone 3 show in Rwanda.
"This will be a good opportunity for some of the swimmers to set good times as we look ahead to the major championships before the end of the year and heading into 2024,” he added
The Kenya Aquatics first vice President said they are talking to sponsors to take up the two-day championship.
"Yes we have approached a couple of sponsors to support us in our journey to grow the sport in this county and we have spoken to the county government to support not only the event but our activities for the new swimming season,” noted Kaberu.
Kaberu said with the national office being given the green light by the World Aquatics following the conclusion of the elections last weekend, it's all systems go for the season.
"Going forward, the politicking is over and it's time to deliver on the mandate given to us by the stakeholders and improve swimming standards. Our priority is to tap the talent at the grassroots which I believe is immense," observed Kaberu
Kaberu said the National Short Course Championship will be held in December at the M-pesa Academy
"I hope we get the opportunity to host the championship. The facility at the place is in good shape and, as a county, we have been very active trying to spread the sport across, especially in public schools," he added.
He cited the case of Mugomoini Primary School as one of the success stories of swimming in the last year.
