The first edition of Genowa 10-a-side rugby tournament will be held at Raila Odinga Stadium in Homa Bay this weekend.
Tournament coordinator Shellan Nyawira said 13 teams have so far confirmed participation in the tournament, which will held annually.
“We plan to have the schools' competition on Friday while the main tournament will take place on Saturday and Sunday,” said Nyawira.
“The design of this tournament is to give teams a chance to prepare for the upcoming 15’s season. Some of the teams that have confirmed are Nationwide side who rarely get opportunities to play in such tournaments.”
Among the teams expected are Kenya Cup returnees Kisumu RFC, Championship side Masinde Murilo University of Science and Technology (MMUST), Moi University, Maseno University, Homa Bay RFC, and Rongo RFC.
“So far we have 13 teams but we shall play a 12-team format so we expect one team to drop out,” Nyawira added.
The schools that have confirmed their participation are Homa Bay High, Mbita High, Aluor Mixed, Otaro Mixed, Agoro Sare, Ober Boys, and J.J. Masime’s Anjego Mixed.
Aluor Mixed, Otaro Mixed, Rongo University, and Koru Girls have registered in the women's division.
The tournament is sponsored by Renegade Air, Homa Bay County Government, KCB, Phillip Aroko Foundation, Cold Springs Hotel, Belmont Hotel, Lucozade and Sharur Tours and Travels.
“We are yet to sign the deal for cash awards but once done, we shall make it public,” added Nyawira.
