For many, the death of a parent is a devastating period and most would shut down their world to mourn their demise. But Odongo is made of different gravy.
The pacy winger braved the news, accepted to travel with the national team Shujaa for the Africa 7s in Zimbabwe, and put in a smashing performance while at it. He was Shujaa’s top try scorer with seven, two of which came in the final against a tough South Africa side.
His mental strength, determination and desire to do well has become the epitome of an upcoming player whose ambition to make it at the top level is unmatched.
“I think he has a big heart,” Shujaa head coach Kevin Wambua said as he described the player’s strength to make it despite the devastating news he had to deal with.
“He is always hungry and wants to learn and get better. This tournament is dedicated to him. Losing his mum and putting in such a brilliant performance like he did is amazing. Those are the signs of a good player and we are proud of him,” Wambua further stated.
He added while calling him infront of everyone; “The future is here guys. I am very proud of this boy. We are happy for him and how he delivered over the weekend.”
Odongo was one of the players that caught the tactician’s eyes during the National Sevens Series, and he was one of six rookies handed an opportunity to shine at the biggest stage on the continent.
For him to step up in the manner he did, was through some inspiration, and his mother watching from above was the driving factor for him in Harare.
“It was very difficult, but through the support of my teammates and also those back at home and my club, I found strength. They encouraged me and I am glad I made them proud,” Odongo said.
He added; “This was my dream I always dreamt to play for the national team and my mum always wanted to see me on that big screen. I promised her that one day I will deliver it and I did it.”
After the final in Harare, skipper Vincent Onyala said as a team they were dedicating the entire tournament to him, and won the title in honour of his departed mum.
