Equity Hawks head coach David Maina has attributed their Sunday win against Zetech Sparks in a women’s basketball premier league match staged at USIU grounds to good defensive display.
However, for his team to pick up more points, Maina wants his charges to improve on their offensive game. The bankers pulled a 40-38 revenge on the students after suffering shock defeat in the first leg.
“We have been working on certain areas in order for us to get back to our winning ways. We played a good defensive game and we need to work more on the offense which was not clicking very well ... The scoring was very low but it’s something we are going to work on going forward as we approach the playoffs,” Maina said.
The soft-spoken tactician added that the team had good coordination but the long breaks in the league is affecting team fitness.
“There was good communication and coordination among the players and I believe going forward we shall see a much more improved team. We still have concerns about the long breaks, which always affect match fitness as we can stay even more than a month without playing,” he lamented.
Despite the defeat, Zetech head coach Maurice Obilo praised his girls for their great display.
“My girls played well only that our offense didn’t click but generally they played well. We are going to work on how we can close out on our offense and we learn how to be responsible for our decisions during the play,”Obilo said.
Equity have now played 16 matches, winning 14 and losing two while Zetech have played 14 matches, winning 12 and losing two also.
In their Sunday match against Zetech Sparks, Equity Hawks started the game by winning the first quarter 10-08 before getting a 08-06 victory in the second quarter taking a 18-14 lead at the break.
The bankers continued to show impressive display in the second half as they won the third quarter 11-09 before Zetech winded it up with a 15-11 win in the last quarter.
Veteran and former national team captain Samba Mjomba and Rachael Akinyi were shining stars for Equity dropping a combined 23 points while Christine Akinyi gave the students a game high 14 points.
In the first leg Zetech hammered Equity 64-47 in July 2022.
Elsewhere, women’s defending champions Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) continued with their unbeaten record after registering double wins in their home court.
The Dockers hammered Strathmore Swords 72-35 on Saturday before humiliating Eldonets 69-10 on Sunday at Makande Gymnasium.
KPA assistant head coach Brenda Angeshi praised her girls for their performance.
“The girls tried the best they could, especially after the long break. We are content with their performance though I believe we can still do better,” Angeshi said.
The Dockers have now played 13 matches winning all of them with 26 points.
