Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on Sunday said the government has engaged a team of experts on power with the aim of arresting the balooning costs of electricity.
According to the DP, who spoke at a media round table, the cost of electricity has been exacerbated by the prolonged dry spell as well as climate change, and is expected to worsen in the coming weeks.
"We are having a problem because of the prolonged drought and the five consecutively failed rainy seasons," Gachagua said.
"In another two to three weeks, we will have a very serious shortage,"
According to DP Gachagua, independent power producers are unsustainable because the vast majority use diesel, making their power option prohibitively expensive.
According to DP Gachagua, the government is now looking into alternative energy sources such as wind, geothermal, and solar energy.
"The government is well seized of this matter because the cost of power increases the cost of manufacturing, which in turn is then passed to the consumer,"
According to DP Gachagua, there is a big team of experts on power who are burning the midnight oil daily with a view to bringing the cost of power down.
The DP said there will be a policy announcement in the coming weeks that will reveal interventions put in place by the government to bring the cost of power down.
"In the next several weeks, there will be a policy pronouncement on that aspect of what the government is doing to bring the cost of power down," he added.
