Gor Mahia FC captain Philemon Otieno says they will not underestimate Mathare United when the two teams clash later Wednesday in an FKF Premier League game.
Gor are enjoying some brilliant form that has put them on top of the league, with the record champions claiming another vital win over Police FC in their previous match.
Otieno says the team must maintain that momentum.
“That was a huge win (at Police) for us against a very strong side that also wants to win the title. It shows how determined we are to win matches. We must continue being determined even against Mathare United who can be very dangerous,” Otieno said.
A win for Gor will see them move seven points clear at the summit, a cushion that Otieno admits will provide them more control of the title race.
“We want to reclaim the title we have lost the last two seasons that means we have to take every game with the seriousness it deserves,” Otieno stated.
Lead striker Benson Omala has now scored 16 goals in 16 games for the 19-time champions and his skipper is backing the forward to break the league record for most goals scored in a season.
The current record stands at 26 goals and was set by former Kenyan international Boniface Ambani in 2006.
“He’s always working hard in training and receiving support from the entire team I am sure if he continues with his current form he will be the man to break the record.”
After struggling early in the season, Mathare have found some form having won three of their last four games to move out of the relegation zone and will hope to trouble Gor.
