Gor Mahia head coach Johnathan McKinstry is hesitant to throw his team into the FKF-PL title talk despite the steady start to the season.
The Kenyan giants have dominated the league for a long time in recent years except for the last two seasons which Tusker piped them to the gong.
"For us one of the things we said to our players is you can't win every game and anyone who thinks we can win every game maybe hasn't been involved too much in football.
But what we said is that make sure you don't give the other team chances and make sure you don't lose," said McKinstry.
In 11 league matches, Gor have lost just once, winning seven and drawing three and despite the good run, McKinstry has singled out ‘luck’, which he says has kept them on top of things. The tactician has had to work with just 18 outfield players following a Fifa transfer ban slapped on the club.
With such a thin squad, injuries are frowned upon and Mckinstry has been lucky to have a fit squad all through.
"You have to remember that not just us alone but also AFC (Leopards) are not able to sign players at the moment and so we have only 18 outfield players,” he said, emphasizing that, “We are thankful for the little rest now before we play City Stars because this Wednesday Saturday routine has been brutal on players,” he said in reference to the fixture glut.
“The fact that we have not had injuries is credit to the medical staff and for we shall see at the end of the season what these points buy us", McKinstry added.
The record 19-times league champions have astoundingly won seven matches out of 11 so far and their 0-0 draw against AFC Leopards in the Sunday 'Mashemeji derby' has pushed them to second position on 24 points, only three behind leaders Nzoia Sugar.
Gor Mahia will be hosting one of the bogey sides City Stars on Saturday with a chance to move to the top of league on goal difference to mount pressure on the defending champions Tusker and Nzoia Sugar.
