Google Home adds scheduling for older Nest thermostats
Google Home has finally introduced scheduling support for older Nest thermostats, a long-awaited update for smart home users. Owners of the 3rd gen Nest Learning Thermostat and the Nest Thermostat E can now set temperature schedules directly within the Google Home app. Previously, these models required the separate Nest app to manage scheduling, which made the experience less convenient compared to newer Nest thermostat models.

This new feature brings older Nest devices in line with newer models that already allow full scheduling within Google Home. With scheduling available in one app, users no longer need to rely on the outdated Nest app for basic functions. The update is rolling out gradually in the US and UK, so some users may not see it immediately, but the shift marks a big step toward Google’s effort to unify its smart home ecosystem.
Why Google Home thermostat scheduling matters for users
For many homeowners, convenience and control are at the heart of using smart thermostats. The ability to create heating and cooling schedules directly in Google Home means users can manage energy efficiency, comfort, and cost savings more easily. It also simplifies the setup for those who prefer controlling all smart devices from one app, without switching between platforms.
Future of Nest thermostats and Google Home updates
Google’s decision to expand scheduling support shows its focus on streamlining the smart home experience. However, it also highlights the phase-out of older devices, as the first and second-generation Nest Learning Thermostats no longer receive software updates. For current users of the 3rd gen and Nest Thermostat E, the new scheduling support is a sign that Google Home will continue to evolve, offering smarter, more integrated features across all devices.
