Despite defeating Ulinzi Warriors over the weekend, Equity Dumas head coach David Maina has called for more from his players as he shifts focus to the last two games in the Kenya Basketball Federation (KBF) regular league.
Equity defeated Ulinzi narrowly 58-57 in a men’s premier league encounter played at the Ulinzi Sports Complex.
“It wasn’t an easy game but we managed to get a slim win, it was a good game for both teams which could have gone either way. Now we are looking forward to the last two games against KU and KPA before we wind up the regular season and start preparing for the playoffs.
“We are likely to finish second in the regular season as we prepare for the playoffs,” Maina said.
On his part, Ulinzi head coach Bernard Mufutu said his side failed to utilize free throws and failed to control the board.
“We failed to control our board well and missed a lot of free throws in the game; basically our consistency during the game wasn’t so good.
“We lost the game on the line because we had a chance in the last two seconds to tie the game with two free throws but we ended up losing one. We missed a lot of free throws that cost us the game,” Mufutu said.
Despite losing to Equity, Ulinzi still top the men’s premier league with 37 points having played 21 matches; winning 16 and losing five while Equity are second on the log with 36 points from 20 matches having won 16 and lost four.
Ulinzi are set to face off with defending champions Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) while the bankers have a date with KPA and KU Pirates in the regular league.
Equity started off the game well, winning the first quarter 15-13 before going down15-10 in the second quarter thus handing the soldiers a 28-25 lead at the break.
After the break Equity became more energized and organized as they crashed the soldiers 25-10 before losing 19-08 in the last quarter.
James Mwangi masterminded Dumas’ win as he had a game high of 22 points followed by Derrick Ochieng of Ulinzi who garnered 12 points.
