Former Kenya rugby sevens super star Dennis Ombachi has hailed his former teammates Collins Injera and Willy Ambaka for being a positive influence in his rugby career.
Ombachi said he learned a lot from Injera during his high school days until joining Mwamba RFC and went on to play alongside him for the national sevens team and labeled him as a player who has left a shoe that will be hard to fill.
“Injera is a super star in world rugby, he put Kenya on the map and the record he has set is amazing, very few people can match that record,” he said, ‘he is a role model to many, personally he has mentored me since my high school days alongside his brother Humphrey Khayange, he will be missed by many,” said Ombachi.
On the other hand, another rugby star Willy Ambaka called time on his international career, bowing out at the men’s national sevens team, after the Sydney leg, where he led Shujaa to a 11th place finish. That effectively brought down a career that has lasted 13 years and his former team mate Ombachi has termed him ‘a true definition of hard work and determination’.
“Ambaka is my personal friend. He is a definition of hard work and determination. He has made his mark in Kenyan rugby and has made other player better, it is sad to see him exit the scene but he leaves with his head up because he has always given his best to the sports in this country ,”stated Ombachi
Ambaka’s retirement comes just a few days after Kenya’s all time top try scorer Collins Injera announced retirement from the sport.
