Gender and Public Service CS Aisha Jumwa was in Ntimaru, Migori County, in commemoration of the International Day for Zero Tolerance on Female Genital Mutilation.

The celebration, organised by the Kenya Anti-FGM Board, is deliberately being held in Migori where the Kuria people reside.

Kuria has been in the headlines numerous times for the high prevalence of harmful practices among them.

The CS was in company of Anti-FGM Board CEO Bernadette Loloju.

The CS visited the Migori County Commissioner's office ahead of the celebration.

Jumwa was briefed on the FGM situation in Kuria and the heightened campaigns during the holiday season when most incidents are reported.

"She was also briefed on the mapping of the community and tracking of all girls that have been mooted as one of the strategies to address the vice and help root out rogue chiefs," Loloju said.

The Anti-FGM Board CEO said that they appreciate that the national prevalence has come down from 21 per cent in 2014 to 15 per cent in 2022.

"The prevalence of new cases of girls between 13 to 19 years is now at 9 per cent," she said.

The Cabinet Secretary also paid a courtesy visit to Migori Governor Dr  Ochillo Ayacko at his office.

The Governor has called for closer working ties to combat FGM in the Kuria region.
