Equity Hawks head coach David Maina is impressed with his team’s performance in the Kenya Women Basketball Premier League as playo-ffs approach.
Hawks hammered Africa Nazarene University (ANU) Panthers 79-37 - a win Maina says was convincing.
“Our defense really worked so well even after starting a bit shaky in the first quarter but we picked up from the second quarter and we set some targets which we were able to achieve at both defense and offense.
“I want to believe with the rotations, we are in the right direction and hopefully with the remaining games before the play-offs, we shall have all the players ready,” Maina said.
On his part, ANU head coach Michael Oluoch admits of giving Equity a chance to dominate the game.
“We started the game well but lost focus in the second quarter which gave Equity an opportunity to open up the lead and take control of the game, the girls also gave up when Equity open the lead. We fought back but the game was out of reach for us,” Oluoch said.
The bankers dominated all the quarters winning 14-11 in the first quarter before another win of 20-07 going to halftime leading 34-18. After the break, the Hawks continued winning the third quarter 23-12 before finalizing with a 22-07 win in the last quarter.
Betty Kananu masterminded Equity’s victory as she had a game high of 26 points while shooting guard Melisa Akinyi had 11. Jamila Wanja pulled 12 points for the students.
The win saw Hawks continue stay at the top of the league with 34 points after playing 18 matches, winning 16 and losing two while the Panthers are sixth on the log with 27 points, having played 19 matches, winning eight and losing eleven.
Strathmore Swords are second on the log with 32 points after playing 19 games while UON Dynamites are third with 29 points after playing 18 matches.
Kisumu Lady Bucks trail at bottom with 16 points after playing 16 matches, winning three and losing 13 while JKUAT LYNX are second last with 19 points after 15 matches.
