Lack of proper training has contributed to Africa Nazarene University's poor start to the season, according to head coach Mike Oluoch.
Both teams, Wolfpacks and Panthers have lost three of their opening four fixtures but Oluoch remains unperturbed by the early slip-up, saying all that will be behind them soon.
“My players had not trained at all having been out of college,” offered Oluoch adding, “Now we are picking up well after few weeks of training.”
He noted: “So far, we are training well. We are starting to build up a system and putting everything in place. We are going to be good and will start winning our games.”
On Sunday, ANU recorded their first victory by defeating rivals University of Nairobi ‘Terrorists’ 68-62 in a hard-fought campus derby meeting at the Nyayo Stadium gymnasium.
“Yes, this win was long overdue. The team played well, fought hard, and followed instructions which really helped us. We are working hard to correct and improve on our game as a team and I like the growth and improvement that the team is making,” he noted.
The women’s side traveled to Nakuru, where they lost 45-41 to the debuting hosts TH3 Swish at the Menengai High School courts.
Eldonets were torched 75-27 by United States International University ‘Flames’ who had 18 points from Neema Molei, 14 from Faridah Yagomba and 13 from Divine Irakoze. They also lost 76-26 to Equity Bank Hawks.
Platinum Eldonets on the other hand, harvested maximum points when they blanked Absa 61-55. This followed their earlier 58-54 triumph over the USIU Tigers. James Ongwae led the tally with 17 points.
Strathmore University Swords ruthlessly cut the University of Nairobi Dynamites 71-38 as Consolata Atieno connected for a game-high of 22 points while Cherly Akoth sunk another 20 in the win.
“We did not really play well. Allowing them to score 38 points is bad defence on our part. We really need to improve, especially on shooting and connect on easy baskets in the paint,” said Swords coach Ronny Owino.
In the lower division matches, Stanbic Shields routed Shoot-4-Life 91-60, Moischers whipped Nebulas 101-64, Neosasa pipped Coastal Kings 62-59, Little Prince lost 61-60 to Cabals Elitists and Zetech University Development blanked Strathmore Swords Two 67-26.
