Cabinet Secretary for Sports Ababu Namwamba revealed that Kenya has signed a partnership with the Cuban government to help uplift of boxing standards in the country.
According to Ababu, Kenya is bound to benefit immensely following a meeting with the Cuban ambassador to Kenya Juan Manuel Rodríguez Vázquez in December 2022.
The CS noted Cuba is among the most established nations in the game, hence an ideal partner in the sport.
"We have spoken with the Cuban ambassador, you know Cubans are very good at boxing. I invited the Cuban ambassador to my office the other day, I spoke with him and we have signed a mutual agreement between Cuba and Kenya to help us build boxing talent in this country," said Namwamba.
The CS was speaking after the 2023 Boxing Federation of Kenya Novices championships that concluded at the Umoja 1 Boxing Hall - Nairobi over the weekend where the Nairobi County team delivered 10 wins out of the total 18 bouts to emerge champions.
"Very soon Musa (the national team coach) will start receiving coaches from Cuba to start helping him. Very soon Mr. Jamal (president of Boxing Federation of Kenya) will start getting invitations from Cuba to send our young pugilists to Cuba for training."
Recently the young boxers had an impressive outing at the East Africa Invitational Tournament in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, where they won four gold medals with Namwamba faulting Boxing Federation of Kenya president Anthony 'Jamal' Ombok, for keeping quiet about it.
"Please, deliver the four gold-medal-winning boxers to my office. I wish to share in their joy, " said Namwamba, adding that the government has established a thorough plan to take sports to the required levels.
The winners from the National Novices championship will take part in the National Intermediates slated for next month.
