The Kenya Boxing Federation has welcomed the challenge of an increased number of boxers that have been promoted into the National Boxing League in the country.
30 boxers out of 100 from different parts of the country were promoted to take part in the top league this season after performing well in the just concluded National Intermediate Championships in Ongata Rongai in Kajiado County over the weekend.
The boxers will also feature in the Kenya Open Championships to be hosted in Nairobi later in the year.
According to the Secretary General David Munuhe, this is a plus for them as a Federation because it will increase the level of competitiveness in the major league and give them the opportunity to choose a stronger team.
"The increase in number of boxers participating in the league is a good thing for us as a Federation because the competition becomes better due to the increase in selection headache which helps coaches to end up getting the best boxers to represent the country. You know, when the number of participants is low, the competition lacks spark but when it is intense, you get good boxers," said Munuhe.
Nairobi and Kajiado produced the largest number of boxers who qualified for the National league championships that could open doors for them to feature in future international competitions.
Nairobi produced 13 boxers, Kajiado five, Homa Bay four, Trans Nzoia three, Kisumu and Nakuru two boxers each while Vihiga, Machakos and Kenya Prisons had one boxer each.
Among the qualified ones include Kajiado's heavyweight boxer Boniface Muchira ,light heavyweight Samuel Kugelu of Kajiado ,Nakuru’s welterweight boxer Justus Ndegwa , Caleb Wandera (Nakuru) , Emmanuel Mswahili of Nairobi, Peter Emmanuel of Nairobi, Amos Amenya of Trans Nzoia , John Kanyike of Kisumu ,Rachael Agata of Nairobi ,Agnes Wambua of Prisons and Kassim Abdii among others.
