The African Union has expressed concern about the violence witnessed during the country's anti-government protests on Monday.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, African Union Chairperson Moussa Faki urged all stakeholders to remain calm and engage in dialogue in order to resolve the current impasse.
"The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, HE. Moussa Faki MAHAMAT, expresses deep concern at violence following public protests in Kenya since 21 March 2023, which has resulted in loss of life, damage to property and the interruption of certain economic activities in the capital, Nairobi," Faki said.
"The Chairperson urges all stakeholders to exercise calm and engage in dialogue to address any differences that may exist in the supreme interest of national unity and reconciliation,"
According to the AU, Kenya held a successful general election, the results of which were unanimously confirmed by the Supreme Court.
"The Chairperson reiterates the total solidarity with and support to the Government and the People of Kenya's efforts working towards national unity, peace and stability in the country," Faki added.
The first round of bi-weekly protests turned violent on Monday, with rival gangs reportedly clashing in Kibra, resulting in widespread property destruction and civilian injuries.
Monday afternoon saw pockets of violent clashes in Kibra; civilians and journalists were both attacked.
The wilful destruction spread to the nearby PCEA church, which was vandalized and equipment of unknown value stolen.
