Arsenal's high profile pre-season friendly against Manchester United failed to live up to expectations, in terms of the performance and result, but it was events off the pitch that made things worse
The Gunners fell to a 2-0 loss to rivals United after first-half goals from Bruno Fernandes and Jadon Sancho sealed the result in 90 minutes, followed by a victory on penalties for Erik Ten Hag's side.
Though the result itself was a disappointing outcome for the club, what was even more disappointing was the conduct of some Gunners fans during the game, in the stands away from the action.
A host of Arsenal fans started fighting each other in the stands, throwing punches at each other during the game.
Two fans in particular hurt each other badly, whilst fighting on the steps, one of them even bleeding as a result of the violent exchanges.Other Arsenal fans around them also began to brawl with each other, making for quite an ugly scene to witness. Whilst all of this was happening, the stadium security was minimal and intervened much later after the damage was essentially done.
By the time the stadium staff eventually arrived at the scene, most of the fighting fans had walked away from the scene. It is still unclear as to what exactly was the cause of the fight and what started it all, but regardless of the reason, it made for some really shocking scenes and not something you want to see happening at a football match. All in all, it was certainly an afternoon to forget for anyone of an Arsenal persuasion. Whilst things on the pitch will undoubtedly improve by the start of the season, this brawl between the fans was a particularly low moment.
Not just for the club, but for football as a whole.
