Defending champions Tusker, record holders Gor Mahia and surprise package Nzoia Sugar are favourites to win the FKF Premier League title this season, says Boniface Ambani.
The former Kenyan international says the three teams have a set of characters and passion needed to go all the way.
“It will only depend on the consistency of the team and also the depth as of now especially because we have started the second leg of the season which is always very tough.
“The three outright teams that I will term them favorites are Tusker, Nzoia Sugar and Gor Mahia,” said Ambani.
Of the three, Ambani reserved special mention for Tusker who have won the league title on the last two occasions including when they beat Kakamega Homeboyz on goal difference last year.
“Out of those three teams, Tusker have that experience of closing the gap to go all the way and lift the title as we saw last season and that is enough to guide them.
“Secondly Gor Mahia have been there (winning the title) for some time and the consistency they have had this season since they picked their form has been splendid,” Ambani said.
Ambani, an AFC Leopards legend, said Nzoia’s biggest threat to its own title challenge would be losing its stars to the competition when the transfer window opens.
“Nzoia, I’m a bit skeptical with them because of a possibility of losing their dependable players to big teams like they have been doing for a long time.
“And these bigger teams I’m very sure when it comes to beefing up their squads they will definitely raid Nzoia for quality additions.
“If the management won’t put in mechanisms to hold on to their key players by giving them a good package then they will lose on that (title push).”
Leaders Gor, who hold a four-point advantage at the top, are hoping to win what would be a record-extending 20th league crown.
