Over 900 Kenyans have expressed interest in serving in the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
The chairperson of the select committee Dr. Nelson Makanda said 920 Kenyans applied to fill the 7 positions by the end of the application period.
Makanda said out of the 920 applicants, 25 have applied to fill the chairperson's position after the term of Wafula Chebukati came to an end.
"We are not worried at all about the small number of those who have applied to be chairperson of the committee, even when the Chebukati team was applying to serve, they were forced to re-advertise the position. So I want to believe we are okay this time round," Makanda said.
Addressing the media after the application deadline, Makanda said they will be sieving the applicants to know who will qualify for the next round of interviews.
Makanda insisted that despite political tensions over the selection panel, they will continue with their mandate as per the law.
"We must be able to put a commission in place, as politicians talk, they can change the law but until that happens, we must do that which we are required to do," he said.
The opposition led by Raila Odinga has declared demonstrations twice every week, to among other issues protests over the selection of IEBC commissioners by the Makanda-led panel which they claim is not by-partisan.
