Job Description (Roles and Responsibilities):
Main purpose of job:
The primary responsibility of this role is to safely perform Plumbing & Water Systems tasks, including planned preventative maintenance (PPM), reactive maintenance, fault finding, design, construction, and inspection & test for plant, equipment, and installations within the British High Commission estate in and around Nairobi, and occasionally overseas, following Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) guidance and standards.
Roles and responsibilities:
- Perform planned maintenance activities, projects, and refurbishments, and respond to Plumbing & Water Systems breakdowns or faults promptly and professionally with a focus on customer satisfaction.
- Execute repairs and works adhering to the quality standards of the FCO, industry best practices, British standards, and Kenyan regulations & requirements applicable to domestic/housing Plumbing & Water Systems and light industrial/commercial plant and equipment.
- Take ownership of Plumbing & Water Systems projects, repairs, and renewals, preparing technical reports, accurate time frames, required resources, start and end dates, project milestones, and dependencies.
- Lead and mentor colleagues in Plumbing & Water Systems maintenance methods, encompassing design, installation, inspection, and testing.
- Liaise effectively with both technical and non-technical colleagues, providing updates on work progress in a language understood by all parties.
- Actively contribute to safe working practices and ensure all work is carried out safely by oneself and others.
- Identify required materials and create work packages for refurbishment, improvement, and renewal to ensure compliance with FCO standards, Kenyan regulations, and other relevant standards.
- Produce comprehensive bills of materials and cost estimates for high-quality Plumbing & Water Systems components, labor, and materials.
- Demonstrate continuous improvement in all work areas to achieve best value for money, safety compliance, and high standards of build.
- Duties may include routine maintenance, small project design, construction, test & inspection, complete building Plumbing & Water Systems renewals (including Potable, Grey & Foul/Sewerage), fault finding, installation repairs, fitting accessories, modification, repairs, and replacement of Plumbing & Water System components in commercial buildings and special locations (e.g., swimming pools). Work at height and outside work may occasionally be required, including on high-risk plant equipment (e.g., Sewerage Plant).

Essential qualifications, skills, and experience:
- Certificate in plumbing from a recognized government institution (Preferably Government trade test III, II & I).
- 5 years of experience in plumbing & water systems work.
- Working knowledge of water filtration systems, e.g., reverse osmosis, UV, Legionella control methods, and legislation.
- System checks for leaks using air and water pressure gauges.
- Experience with pressurized systems, PPR welding, and copper brazing.
- Proficiency in using computers for reporting purposes.
- Ability to interpret blueprints and sketches and create materials lists for job requests and projects.
- Familiarity with fuel lines and pumps.
Desirable qualifications, skills, and experience:
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Knowledge of gas fittings and gas safety.
- Familiarity with Health & Safety standards governing plumbing roles.
- Possession of a current full driving license and safe driving skills (accident-free for three years).
- Experience in borehole pumps and solar water heating.
- Knowledge of hand and power tools.
