Three mental health experts share their insights on why this generation is finding it harder to experience joy and fulfillment.
A recent Global Flourishing Study by Harvard University and Baylor University analyzed over 200,000 young people across 22 countries and revealed a shocking truth: Gen Z is facing a happiness crisis. For the first time, young people aged 18 to 29 are reporting flatlining levels of happiness. Many feel that true happiness and hope are out of reach, leaving them overwhelmed and uncertain about their future.
So, what’s contributing to this alarming trend? It’s not just one thing. Experts believe there are a variety of factors that are affecting the mental health and happiness of this generation.
To better understand the root causes, I reached out to three mental health experts to share their perspectives on this ongoing issue. Here’s what they had to say:
Kelsey M. Latimer, Ph.D., psychologist and CEO of KML Psychological Services, explains that Gen Z often feels a pressure to be "perfect" in everything they do. From excelling in academics to crafting the best college applications and ensuring they are on the best career path, this relentless pursuit of perfection is draining for many young people.
A Gallup study found that nearly 30% of Gen Z feels they must be flawless in every aspect of their lives, with this pressure being even more intense for women (40%) than men (26%). The result? Constant stress, self-doubt, and burnout.
Lynn Zakeri, LCSW, owner of Lynn Zakeri LCSW Clinical Services, points out that Gen Z faces an additional layer of pressure: the need to evolve constantly. As digital natives, Gen Z is surrounded by rapid technological advancement, social movements, and a constant demand for personal and professional growth.
In Zakeri’s view, society's emphasis on innovation and progression—along with the advent of technology—has left little room for stillness or introspection. “Gen Z has inherited a world that demands emotional fluency, social consciousness, and digital presence without pause,” she says.
For a generation always “on,” it can be difficult to find time to recharge and simply “be.” Without moments of rest, happiness feels increasingly elusive.
Daren Banarsë, MA BACP, a senior psychotherapist in Central London, shares another crucial insight: Gen Z’s reliance on instant validation through social media is having a profound impact on their mental well-being. He explains that many young adults struggle to sit with discomfort, and their anxiety skyrockets when they can’t immediately access their phones or social media accounts.
Banarsë isn’t alone in his observations. Jean M. Twenge, Ph.D., professor of psychology at San Diego State University, theorized that the introduction of smartphones in 2012 directly contributed to an increase in loneliness among teens and young adults.
A recent McKinsey Health Institute study supports this connection, showing that social media addiction is linked to poor mental health, as it distorts self-worth and fosters comparison. This constant need for external validation creates a cycle that prevents true happiness from flourishing.
The situation may seem dire, but there is hope. As business leaders and community members, we can create spaces that promote well-being for Gen Z. It's essential to foster environments where mental health is prioritized, where people feel safe to express their struggles, and where rest is valued just as much as productivity.
For employers, this means offering mental health support, flexible work options, and a culture of understanding—particularly for younger employees navigating the complexities of their mental health. Allowing Gen Z to bring their whole selves to work, even when they're struggling, can go a long way toward helping them find community, purpose, and ultimately, happiness.
While it’s clear that Gen Z is struggling to find happiness, with the right support, tools, and cultural shifts, things can improve. It's time to embrace a more compassionate and balanced approach—both in the workplace and beyond—where the pursuit of happiness isn't just an aspiration, but a reality.
