Tharaka Nithi Governor Muthomi Njuki has posted bond for 13 remandees who had been detained at Chuka Prison after they could not raise cash bail awarded by the courts.
The remandees whose respective cash bails are either Ksh.10,000 or Ksh.5,000 were released from prison and allowed to attend court while free after the Governor handed cash to the prison's commissioner
The Governor however cautioned the suspects against failing to attend court warning that they risk being slapped with severe jail terms.
"Mimi kwa uwezo wa mwenyezi mungu nimeweka pesa yangu katika remand ndio wewe uendelee kuattend case... Ukienda upotee, utaskia Muthomi Njuki ako na pingu nikikikutafta. ukipotea utajua hujui. Nitakutafta mpaka mahali utapatikana," said the Governor.
He added: "Na ukirudi hapa, ni vile Principal Secretary amesema. Ni kifungo ya maisha. Ukiwachiliwa na unafaa kuattend case, uendelee kuattend case."
Governor Njuki was accompanied by Correctional Services Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni who made a visit to the prison.
Speaking at the correctional facility, the PS pointed out that prisons are congested therefore there should be away of resolving some disputes such as petty offences.
“There are some things these lovely people did and they regret. If they were given a chance to say sorry I am sure the matter would be resolved amicably. Some of them would not even be here if the matter was resolved before it reached to the authorities. So we must start forgiving and solving issues from the basics,” said the PS.
During the session, the PS agreed with the Governor to relocate Chuka Prison to a 60-acre piece of land in Kabarianga area.
According to Governor Njuki, the land held by Chuka Prison should be available to expand Chuka’s Central Business District (CBD).
