The ‘Bosnia bridge’ in Kahawa Wendani, Kiambu County, has remained a major concern to motorists and pedestrians using it.
The bridge which links Kahawa Wendani and Kiuu wards has for years been neglected.
A picture of the bridge shows a narrow, eroded concrete cutting across the river.
The bridge has no guardrails or any hazard demarcations to guide and protect its users. This, according to the residents, make crossing it a very dangerous affair.
According to some residents, a few people have plunged into the dirty waters after losing their step while crossing the bridge at night.
“I have witnessed a few cases of people falling into the dirty stream at night. This clearly tells you that the bridge is unsafe,” Naomi Wangare, a resident of the area, told Wananchi Reporting.
“The bridge cannot accommodate wider or heavy vehicles, but even those whose vehicles can pass, have to be very careful when driving through,” she added.
Parents in the area have always expressed concern as many children often use the bridge.
“I have young children who have to cross the bridge when heading to and from school. The bridge gets slippery when it rains,” noted Boniface Mwenda.
“It is very easy for a child to slip and fall while crossing,” a concerned Mwenda told Wananchi Reporting.
The residents are now asking the county leadership to move with speed and repair the bridge, or build a new one.
The pleas are coming after officials from Kiambu County Assembly Committee on Transport, Public Works and Infrastructure recently toured the area to assess the bridge.
"I hope that this time around, the bridge will be repaired, because initially we have had people talk but do nothing at the end," one of the residents said.
